HOW TO PICK YOUR COLOUR SCHEME

Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.

- Wassily Kandinsky

There are so many factors to consider when selecting a colour scheme, aside from colour psychology - forming a cohesive colour scheme and even just deciding on what colours you would like to include in your space can be a challenge; in this blog post I have included some suggestions on how to come up with a colour scheme for your space or home.

PULL COLOURS FROM YOUR ARTWORK

A great way to create a cohesive colour scheme in your space is by picking a piece of art that you love and using this as inspiration for the rest of your décor.

This is a living space from Kyal and Kara’s coastal home, this couple competed in season 8 of the block and have gone on to have their own design business and recently build their dream home! As you can see they have incorporated 1 large artwork and have further incorporated those colours into other décor - notice it is not just the cushions, the timber frame links to the coffee table, sage green matches up with the surf board, white and natural colours in the rug.

This image perfectly shows how you can create a scheme that even begins at the floor and brings your eyes slowly up to the artwork and completely conveys a cohesive scheme.

LOOK TO YOUR ENVIRONMENT…

The Australian landscape has so many beautiful colours, especially in our native plants. If you are stuck on finding a colour scheme look to the nature around you, taking notice of the colour scheme outside your home and incorporating those colours into your space can create a beautiful flow on from your outdoor areas to your living spaces. Even just to get outside, walk around metro areas or a botanic garden, taking notice of the colours around you can inspire ideas for your own colour scheme.

USE A COLOUR WHEEK

A colour wheel is a great tool to determine colours that will work well together.

They highlight the options for various colour schemes possible to pair with your favourite colour, of course you don’t have to use bright bold colours and there are thousands of shades and hues available in all sorts of décor items!

While you are selecting this scheme, remember to chose a hierarchy of colours - your primary, secondary and tertiary colours; This will provide a balance within the colour scheme and allow you to build and layer your décor with those colours.

Remember to select colours that provide the feeling you are after in your space, and the overall aesthetic you dream of.
